first 24 hours

It's now been over 24 hours!
Desiree (birthmom) left the hospital right at the 24 hour mark. Looked at the clock as she left our room and it was 2:36. Not sure if that was on purpose or just coincidence.

Last night Lizzie spent time in her room and our room. Weird, and felt like sharing custody with both parties unsure of what to say or how to ask to "visit" the baby. Desiree had leaned towards having Lizzie sleep in her room, but then changed her mind, deciding the extra time would make it harder to say goodbye.

So Lizzie stayed with us in our room.
She was in that sleepy newborn stage, making puppy noises and just being beautiful.

This morning Desiree asked if she could have her for a bit. So we took her over to the other room for a few hours and Richard & I caught up on sleep :)

The nurses told us that Desiree was planning on leaving this afternoon, so we wandered to her room where Lizzie still was. Talked for a few minutes, and she asked if it was okay if she brought Lizzie to our room when she was done saying goodbyes. 30 minutes later they showed up. Lizzie peacefully sleeping and Desiree crying. Very hard as we hugged goodbye.

The visitation part of this, Richard & I wheeling a bassinet back and forth between our room and the birthmom's room. We did well, despite how strange it all sounds and seems!

When it was time for first bath the options were our room, Desiree's room, or the nursery. Collectively decided on Desiree's room, so again we wheeled the baby around the maternity floor :)
